To All Affiliates/ State and Local Label Councils and Fraternal Organizations
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
The Convention of the Union Label & Service Trades Department (UL&STD) will take place on Saturday September 12, 2009 at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Pittsburgh. The US&STD Constitution requires UL&STD to convene quadrennial conventions during the week prior to the convention of the AFL-CIO for the purpose of electing officers—President, Secretary-Treasurer, and 17 Vice Presidents constituting the Department's Executive Board—to four year terms.
As the supreme governing body of the Union Label & Service Trades Department, the convention is also empowered to entertain resolutions submitted for consideration 30 days in advance of the convention July 31, 2009) and to conduct normal business related to the policies and programs of the department in accordance with the convention rules.
Each national or international union in good standing* shall be entitled to the appropriate number of delegates on which they are paying per capita tax as spelled out in Article IV, Section 3 of the UL&STD Constitution (see attached schedule).
Chartered state and local Union Label & Service Trades Councils in good standing shall be entitled to one delegate. Delegares are to be elected or otherwise designated 30-days prior to the convention (by July 31, 2009) and names forwarded immediately to the UL&STD Secretary-Treasurer.
{* In order to participate in the UL&STD Convention, national and international unions must have paid its per capita tax to the AFL-CIO up to date through the third month immediately preceding the UL&STD convention.}
UL&STD also invites the International Labor Communicators Association, Alliance for Retired Americans and all AFL-CIO fraternal affiliates to designate on official delegate each to the UL&STD Convention who will be allocated a voice, but not a vote, in the convention business.
